Obama talks about the “self-congratulatry” mood of his followers. Pool report.
CHICAGO–The pool report, from Politico’s Carrie Budoff Brown, from a high-end fund-raiser Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) headlined Thursday night at Union Station in Washington. He talked about the “self-congratulatory” mood of his supporters.
THE POOL REPORT……
Sen. Barack Obama appeared Thursday night at fundraiser at the Columbus Club at Union Station. It was an event room off the main atrium of the train station. The fare was cheese, crackers, fruits and luncheon meats.
A “host” raised $10,000. The “suggested” contribution was $2,300 per person. The minimum contribution was $1,000.
Obama did not make news. He gave his usual stump speech with one notable exception: He did not mention Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
He instead focused on Sen. John McCain, criticizing his tax, health care and economic policies.
And at the beginning, he mentioned his win Tuesday in North Carolina, and the “self-congratulatory” mood of his supporters and the “turbulence” of the last few weeks:
“Because of the wonderful victory we had North Carolina on Tuesday, because of the wonderful outcome we had in Indiana, considering how much turbulence we had gone through in the previous several weeks, I think everybody is feeling a big self-congratulatory and slapping each other on the back and we knew this was going to come and all that.
“But there are a couple of things I would like to remind people of: number one, this race is not over. And so your participation and your involvement tonight makes all the difference in all of us being able to go ahead and reach the finish line. So for that I want you to know how much I am appreciated and also that it is needed. We still have some work to do until we get to that nomination in August and the nomination doesn’t take place in August it takes place until August.”
“The more important point want to make is that assuming we clear that hurdle and I am the Democratic nominee, it will obviously mark some history. The work that follows will be even tougher than the work that precedes it.”
